george floyd

I woke to the screaming headlines of the name George Floyd. I had known the day prior of his death, but this morning, May 27th, I found the internet mourning in a way I have never seen before.

Police brutality is horrific. We all know that. So stop acting shocked when it happens. React. Make change occur.

Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng were the 4 arresting officers of 46 year old George Floyd. As they were transporting Floyd to the police car, he tripped on the curb and at that point the officers reacted, forcing Floyd on his stomach and placing a knee on his neck. Derek Chauvin, the officer personally responsible for Floyd's death, is seen and heard not responding on Floyd's pleas for help. His chest cam clearly picked up Floyd saying he couldn't breathe and how he was going to die. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lirHz93qJ50

This isn't the first time we have heard about this type of thing and it certainly won't be the last, but the power in this case, is the internet. People from Russia, Turkey, Australia and India are seeing and hearing of this trauma. People all over the world are signing petitions and taking action to get this officers arrested and thrown in jail.

My aunt is African American. Half my family is. They were adopted in decades ago, and there is one story that I was told years ago. My mom, aunt, her three kids and me and my little sister were in the car, on a road trip. We drove past a cop car and shortly afterwards, they were tailing us, alarm blaring. I was too young to remember this, but my aunt claimed she was being pulled over for driving black. My mom laughed at that, thinking there was no way that could be the case. The officers came to the window and once they caught a look at my white, blonde hair and blue eyed mother, they left.

A person shouldn't be afraid to go on a run (Ahmaud Arbery). Or get pulled over for speeding. This is the insanity within our country. The supposed best country in the world? Okay, yeah obviously that is not the case, but we can be on our way there. We need justice and we need to support the BLM (Black Lives Matter). This sheer stupidity and lack of respect for human beings is ridiculous and if you cannot see that, I can only wish you the best in life.

This must be stopped. Take action. If you see something not normal or okay, SPEAK OUT ABOUT IT. Ones power is in their voice and their ability to connect.
